Dean of Arts Development FundÌý

The Dean of Arts Development Fund (DADF) provides essential funding for programs such as internship awards, research internships, and student advising, as well as numerous events, research projects, and publications by students and faculty members.Ìý

Application guidelines

  • Applicant must be a full-time student in the Faculty of Arts
  • The DADF does not fund individual student activities, honorariums, and/or student salaries
  • Only University recognized groups are eligible
  • Priority will be given to projects taking place in the Faculty of Arts
  • Any project that involves another McGill Faculty must show evidence that support is being received from that Faculty (this information must be included in the budget section of the application)
  • Applicants should ideally have some other sources of support (as applications without matching funding from other sources may be unsuccessful)
  • The Department Chair in your department must approve the application. Applications missing this approval will not be considered.
  • Please ensure all fields are filled in.
  • Applications submitted past the deadline will not be considered
  • Awards range from $100 - $2,000

Competition Results

A DADF administrator will inform the applicant of any decision and release the funds where applicable. Successful applicants are required to advertise the support of the Dean of Arts Development Fund. This includes the printing the DADF logo on posters and other promotional material. Recipients of funding are also required to provide a final report on the outcome of their projects or events to the Faculty of Arts Development Office within 30 days of its completion. Applicants who do not submit a final report may be ineligible for future funding.

Li Ka Shing Liberal Arts Initiative

McGill and Shantou University offer exchange opportunities, funded by the Li Ka Shing Foundation, facilitating expertise sharing, research collaborations, and cultural exploration between Canada and China.

Description

Through a special partnership between McGill’s Faculty of Arts and the College of Liberal Arts of Shantou University, exchange opportunities are available for students and scholars from both institutions to share expertise, form research collaborations, and explore the distinct cultural, political and intellectual traditions of Canada and China. All programs are generously funded by the Li Ka Shing (Canada) Foundation.

Wolfe Graduate Fellowships

The Wolfe Chair in Scientific and Technological Literacy is pleased to announce a competition for a limited number of Wolfe Graduate Fellowships for McGill graduate students in the Faculty of Arts whose thesis work reflects the themes of the Chair.

Description

The mandate of the Wolfe Chair is to conduct research, teach and perform public outreach regarding the intellectual foundations, nature and methods of scientific and technological innovation and to provide support to well-rounded students capable of making constructive contributions to debates surrounding science, technology, and society. The Chair is devoted to research that advances understanding of key scientific and technological concepts and examines the relationships among science, technology, and a broad range of social, ethical, political, and economic issues, practices and conditions.

We are seeking outstanding graduate students in the Faculty of Arts conducting research in areas directly related to the themes of the Wolfe Chair. To be eligible, students must have fulfilled all dissertation/thesis proposal requirements for their department. Preference will be given to students who are writing their thesis or dissertation during the 2024-2025 academic year and, in particular, to PhD students during their final year of their program. Graduate students who are registered at PhD 7 or MA 3 during the 2023-2024 academic year are not eligible to apply for this fellowship.

These fellowships (varies) will be awarded on the basis of high academic standing, community involvement, and athletic activities. Students must be registered as full time graduate students during the 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 academic years to receive funds.

Moyse Travelling Scholarship

For undergraduates who will be completing their final year.

Founded by the late Right Honourable Lord Atholstan, to commemorate the "splendid services of Dr. Charles E. Moyse, for forty-two years Professor of English, during sixteen of which he was Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Vice-Principal of the University." Two scholarships, tenable for one year, are to be awarded. One scholarship will be awarded for distinction by the Faculty of Arts and the other for distinction by the Faculty of Science. The values for each Faculty will be approximately $10,000.

Banting Postdoctoral FellowshipsÌý

°Õ³ó±ðÌýBanting Postdoctoral FellowshipsÌýprogram provides funding to the very best postdoctoral applicants, both nationally and internationally, who will positively contribute to the country's economic, social, and research-based growth.

Description

The objective of the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program is to:

  • attract and retain top-tier postdoctoral talent, both nationally and internationally
  • develop their leadership potential
  • position them for success as research leaders of tomorrow

Internal Application Procedures

Competition Details for 2024-2025

There are three levels to the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship Competition: Faculty; University; and National.

The Faculty of Arts will conduct an internal competition to select the candidates it will submit to the University's internal competition. Prospective McGill supervisors of Banting applicants are invited to submit a preliminary application consisting of the following documents,Ìýin a single PDF file, via email toÌýadr.arts [at] mcgill.caÌýby May 13, 2024:

  • Two (2) page (maximum) letter of support for the applicant, clearly describing the complementarities between the applicant, the supervisor, the Faculty, and McGill research environment
  • One to four (1-4) page statement outlining the applicant’s proposed postdoctoral research at McGill
  • Names of three proposed referees, including the applicant’s association to them and a URL link to the referees’ websites

In preparing these materials, you may find it helpful to consult the Banting Selection Committee’sÌý. Please also consult theÌýÌýand McGill’sÌýGPS websiteÌýfor further details on the Fellowship and for the responsibilities of the applicant, supervisor, and other university offices.

Applicant Eligibility

As these are extremely competitive Fellowships, supervisors should choose their nominees with care. In particular, applicants must meet all of the following eligibility criteria:

  • Must not be completing or have completed a PhD at McGill
  • Must have fulfilled all degree requirements for a PhD between September 15, 2021 and September 30, 2025 (inclusively)ÌýandÌýbefore the start date of their award
  • Must not hold a tenure-track or tenured faculty position at McGill or elsewhere
  • Applicants who currently hold or have held agency-specific (CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC) awards at the postdoctoral level are eligible to apply to the 2025-26 Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships programÌýonlyÌýif the term of that funding officially ends on or before September 30, 2025 and prior to the start of the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship. Early termination of the agency-specific postdoctoral award for the purpose of application to the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program is not permitted.
  • Note: There is no citizenship restriction.

Candidates will be nominated by the Faculty of Arts to the Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (GPS) selection committee. Prospective supervisors and applicants will be notified of the Faculty’s decision by June , 2024.

  • July 5, 2024:Applicants submit full applications for Faculty of Arts review. The full application is a the un-submitted Word document of ResearchNet application.Ìý–ÌýIn a separate word document Applicants submit the names of the expert and non-expert reviewers names and email addresses .   • June/July ,2024 All selected nominees will participate in the following Banting application workshops hosted by Graphos at the McGill Writing Centre:
    1. Graphos Banting Writing Workshop
    2. Graphos Banting Peer Review Groups
  • ÌýJuly/August, 2024:ÌýThe Office of the Associate Dean, Faculty of Arts, will provide additional feedback on the full application to applicants and their supervisors.
  • August 2024 – Applicant and supervisor arrange for face-to-face or zoom meeting with expert and non-expert reviewers. Applicant revises application in consequence
  • August, 2024:ÌýThe Associate Dean’s Office will forward the applications to GPS, who will then convene their Selection Committee to review the Faculty-recommended applications.
  • September, 2024: GPS will provide shortlisted applicants with feedback and the Institutional Letter of Endorsement, which is to be included in the final Banting application online. Based on the feedback from GPS, applicants may be strongly encouraged to make modifications to their application before the final application deadline in mid-September (see below).
  • September 17, 2024 (8:00 PM EDT): Applicants selected by GPS will upload the Institutional Letter of Endorsement to their application and submit the complete file on ResearchNet.

FRQSC Postdoctoral Fellowships

The Fonds de recherche du Québec – Société et culture (FRQSC) is dedicated to advancing research in social sciences, humanities, education, management, arts, and literature by providing financial support for research projects, knowledge dissemination, researcher training, and partnerships with academic, cultural, and government institutions.

Description

The Fonds de recherche du Québec – Société et culture (FRQSC) has the following mission:

  • to promote and provide financial support for research in the fields of social sciences and humanities and the fields of education, management, arts and literature;
  • to promote and provide financial support for the dissemination of scientific knowledge in fields of research relating to social sciences and humanities and to education, management, arts and literature;
  • to promote and provide financial support for the training of researchers through merit scholarships for graduate and postgraduate students and persons who engage in postdoctoral research, through professional development scholarships for persons who wish to re-enter the research community, and through grants that allow the teaching duties of college level professors engaging in research activities to be reduced;
  • to create any necessary partnerships, in particular with universities, colleges and cultural institutions, and the government departments and public and private bodies concerned.


SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowships

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) is the federal research funding agency that promotes and supports postsecondary-based research and research training in the humanities and social sciences. Refer .Ìý

CFI-IOF Reserve Fund

McGill releases a small portion of Infrastructure Operating Funds (IOF) received from CFI grants to faculties in support of the maintenance and operations of CFI-funded facilities. As part of this scheme, IOF-eligible expenses can be submitted to the CFI for a refund of previously incurred expenses. Within the Faculty of Arts, we aim to fund campus-based facilities and shared platforms that benefit many users. Priority is given to applications that align with the University’s Strategic Research Plan.

Application guidelines

Applications must demonstrate:

  • A need for the operating/maintenance funding
  • How the requested funds add value to the facility (budget)
  • Usage statistics of the facility in question
  • Expected impact of the funds
  • A long-term strategy for financial sustainability

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must be faculty members holding a primary appointment at one of the departments or centers within the Faculty of Arts
  • The facility or resource target must have been purchased through CFI funding (Innovation Fund, Leading Edge Fund, or Leaders Opportunity Fund), with no remaining IOF available.

Eligible Expenses

Funding requests are for operating or maintenance costs. No upgrades will be funded. Eligible expenses include:

  • Salaries of personnel directly involved in operation and maintenance of CFI-funded infrastructure
  • Extended warranties and service contracts not included in original CFI budget
  • Maintenance and repairs (excluding upgrades and replacements)
  • Supplies and consumables related to operation and maintenance of CFI-funded infrastructure
  • Expenses must be incurred on NON-RESEARCH funds only

Direct costs of research that are charged to research funds such as student stipends, clerical support salaries, or travel expenses are INELIGIBLE. For further details on eligibility expenses see the .

Funding Amount

The total amount of funding available will be based on the justified needs of the claimant and the available budget in the faculty.

Annual Report

The reference period for eligible expenses is April 1st to March 31st.

Units currently funded through this program are requested to produce an annual report detailing how the funds were utilized including detailed information on allocated funds (a report template will be provided) and the benefits accrued to the users. The deadline for the report to the Deanery Finance Arts (finance.arts [at] mcgill.ca) is April 30th.
