Information on Hot Work Procedures
All members of the McGill community, contractors and professionals requiring Hot Work to be done must follow this procedure. The goal is reduce the risk of fire-related disruptions and costs to the University.
When no safe alternative to the hot work is available and the work cannot be relocated to a safe location outside of the building, the hot work procedure must be followed.
Responsibilities:
Permit User
Hot Work Permit user must:
- Obtain 80% passing grade from the web based, training session. Provide results to Fire Prevention.
- Participate in the information session given by Emergency Measures and Fire Prevention.
- Read the instruction manual
- Request a Fire Protection equipment shutdown permit - 2 working day notice. ($3000 fine for unfounded alarms)
- Name a Site Safety Person for the hot work that will authorize the work on site, on the day of the work.
- Identify the continuous fire watch for the hot work, for breaks and following hour.
- Identify occasional monitoring for up to three hours after the fire watch.
- Submit a request for a hot work permit
- Provide warning signage and the permit for the site.
- Return permit viaÌýfireprevention [at] mcgill.ca (email).
Site Safety
The person responsible for site safety must:
- Obtain 80% passing grade from the web based, training session. Provide results to Fire Prevention.
- Participate in the information session given by Emergency Measures andFire Prevention.
- Ensure smoke detection has been deactivated before the hot work starts
- Ensure fire watch is on site and planned monitoring will follow
- Review permit with the worker – both parties must sign the permit
- Post warning signage and permit on site. Recuperate after monitoring has concluded
- Authorize work to proceed only when precautions are taken and fire watch is on site
- Ensure a continuous fire watch during the hot work, during breaks and the following hour.
- Ensure disabled fire detection is reactivated as soon as work is completed
- Verify that the site monitoring is in place after fire watch is completed
- Interrupt hot work if site becomes unsafe or no longer meets permit conditions.

Hot Work & Equipment Shut Down Information Session
This training is mandatory for all McGill representatives or staff that issue a hot work permit, that are responsible for safety on hot work sites and/or that request a fire protection equipment shutdown (FS-002).Ìý This session is also an important asset for any McGill staff that perform hot work.
