EIP Application Form - Winter 2025

Students who have secured internship opportunities for the upcoming semester are required to complete and submit the EIPÌýApplication Form in order to receive official approval from the Engineering Career Centre to participate in the Engineering Internship Program (EIP) and have their internship formally recognized and registered on their transcript.

Students who wish to have their internship recognized as part of the Engineering Internship Program (EIP) must notify the Engineering Career Centre upon acceptance of their internship offer at intern.engineering [at] mcgill.caÌý

International Students are required to obtain a Coop Work Permit to participate in internships through the Engineering Internship Program. This applies to internships taking place during the Winter, Summer and Fall semesters.Ìý

If your employer has requested that a letter or form be provided or signed by McGill University with relation to your upcoming internship, please note that this will only be possibleÌýif the internship is officially approvedÌýas part of the Engineering Internship Program.

Internships cannot be registered or recognized retroactively.Ìý Students must register their internship upon acceptance of the internship offer and adhere to the indicated application deadlines below.

NOTE: There are two (2) separate application deadlines based on specific student status:

  • General Winter 2025ÌýEIP Application Deadline for Local Quebec/Canadian StudentsÌýis Tuesday, January 7th 2025.
  • International Students' Winter 2025 EIP Application Deadline is Friday, December 6th 2024.ÌýLate registrations will not be permitted due to significant processing delays related to the issuance of Coop Work Permits at Immigration Canada. WINTER 2025 APPLICATIONS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS IS OFFICIALLY CLOSED. NO NEW APPLICATIONS ARE BEING ACCEPTED.

Why do an internship?

Participating in the Engineering Internship Program, and completing an internship in industry can help students to:

  • Clarify their post-graduation career goals and preferred working style.
  • Learn more about the workplace and employer expectations.
  • Apply knowledge gained in the classroom.
  • Develop skills and gain relevant work experience.
  • Learn workplace etiquette and business communication.
  • Improve organizational and time management skills.
  • Earn a salary to help finance their education.
  • Get hands-on experience with the latest tools or methods in their field.
  • Develop business contacts and build a network to assist in finding employment upon graduation.
  • Become a more marketable candidate to employers upon graduation.

Student Eligibility

  • You must be registered full-time in their program before and after their internship.
  • You must have at least 12 credits remaining in their degree program after the internship (not including minors).
  • You must have a CGPA of 2.0/4.0 or higher at the time of application.
  • International students are eligible to apply for internships (some restrictions apply) – but are required to obtain a Coop Work Permit. Please book an appointment to speak with the intern.engineering [at] mcgill.ca (Internship Advisor).
  • You are expected to plan your course schedules prior to beginning the internship job search. Book an appointment with your Academic Advisor, if necessary.
  • You must clear any existing 'Holds' on your Minerva Student Account.
  • Students pursuing internships may be allowed to take an academic course at the same time, provided some additional conditions are met:
    • You would be able to pursue one course (max 4-credits) while on internship term through the Engineering Internship Program
    • Email intern.engineering [at] mcgill.ca to request special permission to register for an academic course while on internship
    • You must have a 3.0/4.0 CGPA to make this request
    • You must inform the course instructor/professor that you will be on a full-time internship while pursuing this course and obtain their written permission to do so,Ìýciting your name and the name/number of the course
    • You must inform your employer/internship supervisor that you intend on pursuing a course while under their employ and obtain their written permission to do so; citing your name and the name/number of the course
    • You are advised to speak with an Academic Advisor to discuss the best time to complete an internship as certain courses in your curriculum are only offered at specific times during the academic year.ÌýYou may not miss more than 2 academic terms (fall/winter) for internships
    • Please take note of the following:
      • Students pursuing an internship through the Engineering Internship Program must be returning to full-time studies (at least 12-credits remaining) in their major following the completion of the proposed internship term; if the requested course registration prevents you from returning to full-time status with at least 12-credits remaining in your major, the request will be denied.
      • Mechanical Engineering students will not be permitted to register for any Capstone courses while on an approved internship through the Engineering Internship Program

Application Procedures

  • You should begin your internship job search at least one term prior to your preferred internship start date.
  • Many internship opportunities are posted on ; we also encourage you to finalize any contacts you may have made through networking, previous jobs or acquaintances.
  • Selected interview candidates are notified by email by the Engineering Career Centre, or directly by the employer either by phone or email. Students are expected to check their email on a daily basis.
  • You should notify the Engineering Career Centre of all job offers.

Engineering Internship Program (EIP) Requirements

The EIP is an academic program – each internship term will be reflected on your transcript as the Industrial Practicum course (FACC 200, 201, ...).

  • Each internship / industrial practicum must be approved by the Engineering Career Centre, and you must meet the registration deadline dates and all requirements.
  • An internship / industrial practicum may begin in September, January or MayÌýand continue for 4, 8, 12 or 16 months (you may only begin 16 month internships in May).
  • The duration of each term must be set by the employer.
  • The internship / industrial practicum must be a full-time, paid position with a salary based on the student's experience and level of studies.
  • internships must be industry-centric; research/academic research are not recognized within the EIP
  • You must return to complete your studies at McGill University after the internship. Internship students will receive an automatic extension for the completion of their studies.
  • At the end of each work term, you will be required to complete a mandatory experiential learning assignment, alongside your Employer Evaluation
  • Note: You may find your own internship independently. Contact us if you are planning on accepting a position that you would like to register as an internship.

Industrial Practicum (4-month work term) course

  • The Industrial Practicum course is a zero credit, pass/fail course.
  • To obtain a passing grade, you must: work for the mandatory agreed upon duration; obtain a satisfactory evaluation from your employer; and submit the mandatory evaluation and an experiential learning assignment. by the stipulated deadline date.

Student Responsibilities

It is expected that students participating in the EIP will:

  • Provide accurate and appropriate information on their qualifications and interests when applying for positions
  • Notify the Engineering Career Centre office well in advance if interviews must be rescheduled or cancelled
  • Notify the institution of acceptance or rejection of an offer within the time allotted
  • Honour the acceptance of the offer, once an offer has been accepted (verbally, by email or a contract), students will stop applying for internships and will not do any further interviews.
  • If after accepting an offer, you decide to withdraw that acceptance, you will no longer be eligible for the Engineering Internship Program and will no longer have access to internship postings on MyFuture

On the job the student will:

  • Be responsible and accountable
  • Respect safety and the environment
  • Demonstrate ethical and professional judgment
  • Be punctual, resourceful, adaptable and productive
  • Recognize and respect the employer/employee relationship: communicate progress and areas of concern with the employer first, then the Engineering Career Centre
  • Assist the Engineering Career Centre in coordinating possible site visits
