Juno Win for McGill Violin Professor Mark Fewer
McGill violin professor Mark Fewer has won the Contemporary Jazz Album of the Year at this weekend's Juno Awards for his album titled Changing Seasons, recorded with the Phil Dwyer Orchestra. CHANGING SEASONS is inspired by John Coltrane as much as Vivaldi, and the combination of a large band with horns and a massed string section integrates these diverse musical elements in a truly fresh and accessible way. The work began as a collaboration between Dwyer and internationally renowned violin virtuoso Mark Fewer. CHANGING SEASONS is a compelling violin concerto that bridges the jazz and classical worlds in seamless fashion. Premiered in November 2010 at the Schulich School of Music with an orchestra composed of McGill faculty, guests, graduates, students and the composer Phil Dwyer himself, conducted by Prof. Gordon Foote. The work now destined to find a wider international audience with the October release of its recording on ALMA Records.
