Launch of the McGill International Judicial Internships Programme

Published: 23 February 2006

The Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs has awarded a one-year, $150,000 grant to the McGill Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism to finance an internships programme. Consequently, young Canadian law graduates will get the chance to work directly with members of international courts and tribunals.

The International Judicial Internships Programme will send ten law interns to organizations such as the International Court of Justice, the Permanent Court of Arbitration and the International Criminal Court (The Hague), the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (Costa Rica), the Appellate Body of the World Trade Organization and the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights (Geneva), the Special Court for Sierra Leone (Sierra Leone) and the International Court of Arbitration (Paris), this for a period of nine months.

Building on the recognized strength of the Faculty in international law, this new programme will incorporate and support a number of existing internships: the clerkship programme at the International Court of Justice; the intern programme at the Permanent Court of Arbitration, also based in The Hague; the legal clinic supporting the judges of the Special Court for Sierra Leone; and the International Human Rights Internships Programme at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.

Students interested in applying for internships: more detailed information about the placement and selection procedure will be announced shortly.
