A Practical New Book On Managing Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)Launched at the MUHC
OFFICIAL LAUNCH OF THE BOOK comprehensive management of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease to improve the knowledge and skills of healthcare professionals for optimal management of COPD patients.
Today, with over forty invited guests and collaborators in attendance, Dr. Jean Bourbeau, Medical Director of the COPD Clinic and the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program of the Montreal Chest Institute, McGill University Health Centre, officially launched his book, COMPREHENSIVE MANAGEMENT OF CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASE, at the Montreal Chest Institute.
This work was co-authored with Diane Nault, Head nurse for Outpatient Clinics at the Montreal Chest Institute, MUHC, and Élizabeth Borycki, Clinical Informatics Specialist for Project GENESIS at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, as well as numerous collaborators from across Canada. It is a practical guide for healthcare professionals, designed to improve their knowledge and skills for optimal management of COPD patients.
"COPD is under-diagnosed and under-treated, and its prevalence and associated mortality rate are increasing sharply. It decreases the quality of life of those suffering from it and significantly increases the healthcare costs for society," emphasizes Dr. Jean Bourbeau, who has worked in recent years on developing a new approach to COPD based on self-management.
His multi-centre Quebec study has shown that this approach leads to a 40-60% decrease in visits to Emergency and the number of hospitalizations, and has already produced noticeable results since its implementation at the Montreal Chest Institute. This book will help other health professionals achieve similar outcomes at their own institutions.
