Upcoming WMS feature: Channels Event Search
The Web Service Group is working to make it easier for visitors to find and view events on WMS sites, similar to what is on www.mcgill.ca/music/events.
As a result, Channels Event Search will soon be made available to all WMS sites.
What is it?
Channels Event Search makes it possible to display, search, and filter local channels event content on any site where it is enabled.
This module provides the following displays:
- Current - includes current and upcoming events
- Calendar - includes Month, Week, and Day displays
- Events Search - provides a search page with a date range
All displays will have filters similar to the  so that users can refine the results.
Channels Event Search will be disabled by default and can only be enabled by Site Administrators.
Once enabled, it will display local channels events at the following URLs which are now reserved for the module:
- www.mcgill.ca/<yoursitename>/events/search
What should I do to ensure that Channels Events Search will work on my site?
You would need to determine if:
- Your site has enough local events occurring throughout the year to justify all three displays
- Events aggregated from other sites will not be included in Channels Events Search
- Your local events are appropriately tagged and categorized in order to make use of filters
What if I already have content at a reserved URL?
If you have content at www.mcgill.ca/<yoursitename>/events or another reserved URL, you must either unpublish or delete the content.
If the content must be preserved, you should follow these steps:
- Clone your content.
- Rename the cloned content or change the URL alias so it will not reside at www.mcgill.ca/<yoursitename>/events or another reserved URL.
- Delete the original content.
Only then should the Channels Events Search module be enabled. If the original content is simply renamed or given a different alias, the Current display could still be redirected to the original content page.
How do I use it?
After the module has been deployed on all WMS sites, detailed instructions will be published in the McGill IT Knowledge Base.
