But as Jason Samson sees it, climate is as important in shaping the distribution and movement of humans as it is in other animals. The McGill-trained ecologist and fellow researchers have been using modeling techniques similar to those used to define the ecological niche for plant and animal species to explore the correlation between climate patterns and population growth in the contiguous United States between 1900-2000. And what they discovered was a pronounced population shift away from areas within the U.S. with cool and seasonal climates, towards those areas that are warmer and drier year-round, and they found that this was the case even when it meant moving further away from agricultural lands. </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-primary-image field-type-image field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><img class="no-float" src="/channels/files/channels/styles/wysiwyg_medium/public/channels/image/samson_plos_one_en.gif?itok=zGpqGvZB" width="160" height="176" alt="People felt climate change in US during 20th century" title="People felt climate change in US during 20th century" /></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-published-date field-type-datestamp field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><div class="custom-multi-date"><div class="multi-date first"><span class="label">Published: </span><span class="day">25 </span><span class="month">October </span><span class="year">2012</span></div></div></div></div></div> Thu, 25 Oct 2012 18:23:24 +0000 webfull 87990 at /channels Vision 2020: Creating a Sustainable McGill /channels/news/vision-2020-creating-sustainable-mcgill-214799 <div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-published-date field-type-datestamp field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><div class="custom-multi-date"><div class="multi-date first"><span class="label">Published: </span><span class="day">23 </span><span class="month">February </span><span class="year">2012</span></div></div></div></div></div> Thu, 23 Feb 2012 20:11:15 +0000 mark.styles@McGill.Ca 77861 at /channels »FWDfest research festival /channels/news/%C2%BBfwdfest-research-festival-174270 <div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-primary-image field-type-image field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><img class="no-float" src="/channels/files/channels/styles/wysiwyg_medium/public/channels/image/174270_fwdfest2.jpg?itok=ixd2eN9m" width="160" height="109" title="Bellairs »FWDfest Barbados" /></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-published-date field-type-datestamp field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><div class="custom-multi-date"><div class="multi-date first"><span class="label">Published: </span><span class="day">9 </span><span class="month">May </span><span class="year">2011</span></div></div></div></div></div> Tue, 10 May 2011 14:19:26 +0000 mark.styles@McGill.Ca 77408 at /channels Call for nominations: Emerald Key & Catalyst Awards for Sustainability (staff and students) /channels/news/call-nominations-emerald-key-catalyst-awards-sustainability-staff-and-students-173421 <div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-published-date field-type-datestamp field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><div class="custom-multi-date"><div class="multi-date first"><span class="label">Published: </span><span class="day">28 </span><span class="month">March </span><span class="year">2011</span></div></div></div></div></div> Thu, 31 Mar 2011 18:46:09 +0000 mark.styles@McGill.Ca 77318 at /channels Producing clean water in an emergency /channels/news/producing-clean-water-emergency-172013 <div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-published-date field-type-datestamp field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><div class="custom-multi-date"><div class="multi-date first"><span class="label">Published: </span><span class="day">23 </span><span class="month">February </span><span class="year">2011</span></div></div></div></div></div> Fri, 04 Mar 2011 19:51:11 +0000 mark.styles@McGill.Ca 11216 at /channels
