The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that Professor Tina Piper has been appointed associate dean (academic) and that Professor Darren Rosenblum has been appointed associate dean (graduate studies).

They will begin two-year terms on 1 September 2022 and 1 August 2022, respectively. They are replacing Professor Rosalie Jukier and Professor Andrea Bjorklund, who will have completed three years in these roles.

The Faculty of Law is delighted to announce four appointments for the 2022-2023 academic year.  

Professor Jennifer Raso will join the Faculty of Law as assistant professor on 1 August 2022. Konstanze von SchĂĽtz will begin as Wainwright Junior Fellow on 1 January 2023. ´łĂ©°ůĂ©łľ˛â Boulanger-Bonnelly will begin as Boulton Junior Fellow on 1 January 2023. Both fellows will become assistant professors on 1 August 2023.

The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce it was once again ranked among the world’s top universities at which to study law by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). The 2022 QS World University Rankings by Subject in Law and Legal Studies placed McGill Law 31st worldwide.  

Since QS introduced the ranking in 2011, the Faculty of Law has consistently placed in the top 35 institutions globally. The QS ranking is based on academic reputation, employer reputation, H-index citations, and citations per paper.

The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that Professor Andrea K. Bjorklund has joined the panel of arbitrators for the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) for a six-year term. She was appointed by Canada’s Ministry of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development.

The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that, at a ceremony on 26 November, the University of Oxford awarded Professor Lionel Smith a higher doctorate, the Doctor of Civil Law (DCL).

Higher doctorates are earned awards that recognize excellence in published scholarship. Two independent judges concluded that Professor Smith’s work met the required standards, characterizing it as ”of global reach and importance” and ”of the absolute highest quality.”

On 26 November, 2021, acclaimed legal scholar Angela Swan was awarded a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, and gave the commencement address at the Faculty of Law’s fall convocation ceremony.

Since its 2019-2020 edition, the Graduate Law Students Association (GLSA) Conference has combined cinematography and the law. In 2019-2020, the organizing committee planned a conference inspired by the movie Love Actually and presented various panels discussing the legal implications of trust and intimacy. The 2020-2021 committee then organized a conference entitled “Law and the City”, to homage the famous TV series and movies Sex and the City.
