The Faculty of Law is delighted to announce that Professor Helge Dedek will be promoted to the rank of full professor, effective 1 January 2021.

Professor Dedek joined the Faculty of Law in 2006 as a Boulton Junior Fellow. Appointed as assistant professor in 2007, he became an associate professor in 2012. From 2012–2016, he served as the director of the Institute of Comparative Law. He has been the co-editor in chief of the American Journal of Comparative Law since 2014.

The Faculty of Law is delighted to announce that Samuel Gale Professor Robert Leckey, BCL/LLB’02, has been reappointed as dean. Dean Leckey’s reappointment, approved by the Board of Governors at its meeting on 10 December 2020, is effective 1 July 2021 for a term of five years.

Dean Leckey joined the Faculty of Law in 2006, where he teaches and researches in constitutional law, family law, and comparative law. From 2014 to 2016, he served as director of the Paul-André Crépeau Centre for Private and Comparative Law.

We are pleased to share that Professor Emeritus the Hon. Irwin Cotler, OC, OQ, PC, BA’61, BCL’64, LLD’19, has been named Special Envoy on Preserving Holocaust Remembrance and Combatting Antisemitism by the Prime Minister of Canada. Professor Cotler is the first incumbent of this role aimed at preserving the stories of Holocaust survivors through younger generations, and working to promote and defend pluralism, inclusion, and human rights.

The Student Affairs Office is holding a series of 30-minute Exam Clinics for McGill Law students for a week. Staff will walk you through installing Examplify and doing a mock exam to check that the installation went correctly.

There are seven sessions for first-year students, three for upper-years, and four sessions for graduate students. Students are invited to drop in the sessions for their specific groups. Be sure to have your laptop or computer ready.

The O’Brien Graduate Fellowships were established in 2005 through a very generous gift from David O’Brien, BCL 1965, for newly admitted outstanding Masters or Doctoral students studying in the area of human rights and legal pluralism in the Faculty of Law, McGill University.

McGill’s graduate programs in law are the most extensive in Canada. Courses draw upon the civilian and common law traditions, but also include diverse legal traditions, legal theory, international law, environmental law, health law, human rights law, comparative private and public law, and air and space law.
