Viennese culture at the cusp of the 20th century constitutes one of the significant moments that defined Modernism in the arts. “Vienna-1900” was a celebration of the subversive powers that changed the art and culture of the late 19th century.

However, the cultural landscape of Vienna was one of great contradictions: political conservatism and social liberalism, multiculturalism and virulent anti-Semitism, social pretentiousness and laissez-faire behaviour. The city stood for daring artistic experimentation and stifling conservatism, imperial splendour and abject poverty. The seminar will be devoted to looking at and reflecting upon Vienna’s contribution to Modernism, but the emphasis will be placed on architecture, the visual arts and urban planning.

Facilitator

Adrian Sheppard is Emeritus Professor of Architecture at McGill University.
