Summer Studentship Program for Black Undergraduate Students 2021
In collaboration with the International Brain Research Organization (IBRO) the BRaIN EDI committee was able to offer a paid 12-weekÌýsummer studentshipÌý(June 1st to August 31st , 2021) to three successful applicants. The goals of the program were, to broaden participation in research opportunities by purposefully including students from marginalised and minoritirized groups; and to build an inclusive research environment in order to strengthen the pathways for Black students to move into advanced study and ultimately, into leadership in academia and in all sectors of society.
Mentorship Program
The objective of the BRaIN Mentorship Program is to provide a formalized mentorship program for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows within the BRaIN Program at the RI-MUHC.
• The BRaIN Mentorship Program aims to better prepare trainees to navigate complex academic and research environments, create a more supportive and enjoyable work environment, and improve trainee access to opportunities which will enable greater career success.
• Mentorship will be provided to new trainees (graduate students and postdoctoral fellows) by senior students and postdoctoral fellows, and faculty members who have extensive experience with the BRaIN Program environment. Mentee-mentor interactions will follow fundamental principles of respect, friendship, and professionalism.
• The BRaIN Mentorship Program is expected to be complementary to other mentorship mechanisms provided by McGill University programs (i.e. IPN academic mentorship, IPN buddy program) and research labs (i.e. MSc./Ph.D. thesis/postdoctoral research supervisors/co-supervisors).
• The mentorship program will provide an opportunity for senior students and postdoctoral fellows/research associates, as well as, faculty members to improve their mentorship skills through participation and training opportunities organized through the BRaIN EDI Committee. Strengthening mentorship skill is expected to enhance professional development.
