MBA alumnus named Canadian CFO of the Year
McGill MBA alumnus Nadeem Velani (MBA’98) has been named Canada's CFO Of The Year™ for 2020. Velani has served as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of railway company Canadian Pacific since 2016.
This award, presented by the Financial Executives International Canada, PwC Canada and Robert Half, recognizes Velani for the strides he has made in Canadian Pacific’s financial performance, stakeholder relations, operational data usage, and sustainable growth.
Leadership shakeup at Bombardier
Alain Bellemare (MBA’93) has lost his reign as CEO of Bellemare, with Hydro-Québec CEO Éric Martel taking the top spot at the struggling company.
Professor Karl Moore, who has long followed Bellemare’s leadership at Bombardier, notes that now is the time for a new CEO to lead the company into its next chapter.

Desautels alumnus Ilias Konstantopoulos (MBA’92) has been announced as the new CEO of real estate organization Great Gulf Group. Konstantopoulos brings to the role more than 30 years of experience in operations, corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions and capital markets, most recently as CFO of Granite Real Estate Investment Trust.

Professor Richard Donovan honoured in MBA Japan case competition
In honour of the late Professor Richard Donovan, the Desautels MBA Japan program recently hosted the McGill MBA Japan Case Competition. The internal event gives students a chance to put their knowledge to practice by bringing them together over 24 hours to solve a case competition.
Teams presented to a judging panel of McGill MBA Japan alumni before the winners—Hoson Kablawi, Naohisa Takahashi, and Hazuki Yamashita—were awarded the Richard Donovan Cup.

Desautels MBA students place third in social business case competition
Desautels MBA candidates Tiffany K. Ellis, Kelly Gonzalez, Garima Singh, and Meghan McCoubrey placed third at the recent Creative Shock Case Competition. Initially competing against 600 teams globally, the Desautels team travelled to Vilnius, Lithuania from November 26 to December 2 to compete as one of the top 10 finalists in the social business case competition.
Desautels MBA student takes top spot at Deloitte case competition
Congratulations to McGill student Yuan Chu Zi Lao (MBA’21) on her first-place win at the recent Deloitte Impact Case Competition. The competition kicked off at the Deloitte offices in Montreal on November 22, where eight teams were formed, and the case was presented to students. Yuan was grouped with McGill engineering student Dante Nesparoli and HEC Montréal students Thao-Anne Le and Felicia Élise Ngoma.
