SYNOPSIS: Various approaches have been used to assess the burden of cancer due to preventable risk factors. Assessing the impact of workplace factors can be particularly challenging. In this seminar I will talk about the some of these challenges and how we have chosen to address them in our Canadian burden of occupational cancer project. In particular, I will focus on the choice of appropriate relative risk estimates, the methods to assess historic exposure, the shape of dose-response relationships, and the impact of these choices on the magnitude of burden estimates, using diesel engine exhaust and crystalline silica as examples. I will discuss the implications of using different EA approaches for other national and global burden efforts.
