Following the renovation of the Roddick Gates in 2017 and the upgrade of the lower section of the main road on the downtown campus in 2019, the final step in the redevelopment of McGill's main road is set to start in June 2024.Ìý
The project entails the reconstruction of the Upper Main Road, from the Y-intersection up to the area in front of the McCall MacBain Arts Building. The project aims to celebrate Main Road as a pedestrian zone, offering space for congregation, socialization, and events.Ìý
The Y-intersection was redesigned in collaboration with an Indigenous designer and an Indigenous artist. It will pay homage to the diverse Indigenous peoples whose footsteps have marked the land McGill is located on.Ìý
As the road gets closer to the mountain, there will be more vegetation and granite compared to the lower main road. The project will also reduce the steep incline of certain parts of the Upper Main Road to improve the area’s accessibility.ÌýÌý
In addition, the project will include new lighting, paving, site furniture, and rainwater management.Ìý
