Funding Expectations for PhD students

Graduate research is at the heart of our University, and we recognize that adequate funding is important for our PhD students to thrive. All McGill PhD students receive a Funding Letter with their Offer of Admission. It comes as a separate letter through the admissions system, although some departments may also send it by email. If you do not receive a letter from your program when your receive an Admissions Offer, .Ìý

Although funding levels vary by program, all PhD students receive funding to offset the costs of tuition, fees and/or living expenses. 95% of PhD students have their tuition covered*. You can find out more about Average PhD funding levels by Faculty on our website. Funding packages mostly consist of awards for progress towards your degree. These awards come from central funds, donations and endowments or research grants from our professors. If there is an expectation that you supplement your award funding with a salary for employment (e.g. Teaching or Research Assistantships), it will be clearly stated in your letter.Ìý

We are proud that our PhD students consistently win prestigious external awards, such as the  and the scholarships from the . All PhD students receiving internal funds are required to apply to at least one federal and one provincial award each year they are eligible. We provide support for your success in these competitions as they are a key part of your academic training and an important addition to your curriculum.

International Students

International PhD students also receive funding packages with their admissions offer. All international PhD students receive funding to cover their international supplement*, which is the difference between Quebec resident tuition and International tuition. International students are also often winners of external awards. In addition to the , international students are eligible to apply to other opportunities like the Sponsorship agreements that McGill has signed with international agencies, and External DFWs.Ìý

Complementary Funding

Considering travel outside of the province of Quebec to conduct research or activities related to your degree? Graduate students can receive up to $1,500/month through the Graduate Mobility Award. This award does not affect your funding package.Ìý
