At McGill, all postdocs fall under one of three categories depending on specifics of how they receive their funding. Learn more about which category of postdoc you belong to and how it affects your postdoc experience at McGill.Ìý

Postdoctoral Fellows

Postdoctoral Fellows are postdocs who receive external funding, and are paid directly by the external funding agency or through the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) or an affiliated institute.

If this is your case, you will be considered a student, not a McGill employee. Postdoctoral Fellows are also sometimes referred to as "Group A."Ìý

Postdoctoral Scholars

Postdoctoral Scholars receive external funding like Postdoctoral Fellows. However, Postdoctoral Scholars are paid 100% of this funding through McGill's payroll systems.

If this is your case, you will be considered a student, not a McGill employee. Postdoctoral Scholars are also sometimes referred to as "Group B."Ìý

Postdoctoral Researchers

Postdoctoral Researchers receive part of their funding directly from McGill University. Postdoctoral Researchers are consideredÌýboth students and McGill employees.

Postdocs receiving more than 25% of their income from McGill funds are unionized Postdoctoral Researchers while all others are non-unionized. Postdoctoral Researchers are also sometimes referred to as "Group C."Ìý
