About MMC

McGill Materials Characterization (MMC) is an initiative of Professor George Demopoulos (Former Chair) and Dr. Florence Paray (Academic staff, former Director of Characterization Facilities) to regroup the departmental shared laboratories of the Mining and Materials Engineering Department, McGill University. It provides a well-established and comprehensive management structure. MMC is a well-equipped, accessible, functional and tri-agency compliant suite of characterization laboratories and services.

MMC welcomes the opportunity to work with students, researchers from McGill University or other universities, industry from small to large companies and governmental research laboratories. We are passionate about education, offering service and collaborative problem solving. The purpose of MMC is to allow characterization of a wide variety of materials with the state-of-the art equipment in our laboratories and within our network of partnering laboratories.

Mandate of MMC

McGill Materials Characterization has been created to support education and research in offering access to the state-of-the-art equipment and expertise. Our priority is to teach, train and serve our students and research staff in learning and carrying out with competency their characterization work. We are also offering our scientific and technical services to externals customers from other universities, industry, and research laboratories.

The mandate of McGill Materials Characterization is:

  • To provide human and instrumental infrastructures in materials engineering and characterization
  • To support education, research, innovation, collaboration, partnership, and services
  • To have a well-equipped and maintained, accessible, functional suite of characterization laboratories
  • To give access to specialized equipment which is maintained to a high level of performance with people always available for assistance, expertise, and troubleshooting

Board of directors

MMC is governed by a board of directors Professor Raynald Gauvin and Dr. Florence Paray assisted by an advisory professors committee.

Advisory Committee

The advisory committee of McGill Materials Characterization consists of the members of the direction, engineering professors for the Department of Materials Engineering and one professor of the Department of Chemical Engineering. With a wide variety of research areas ranging from electron microscopy, characterization, transportation, electronic, nano and bio materials, surface science and engineering, they are bringing their expertise and contribute to MMC.

Our objectives are to generate operation funds, to have a strategic vision for further development and a strong recognition inside the Faculty of Engineering, McGill University and externally. The MMC Associate Director, Dr. Florence Paray, is tasked with managing, overseeing the activities and financial operations of the Facilities, with dealing with staff, users and customers and all equipment related business.
