Francesco Carli, MD, MPhil, FRCA, FRCPC

Professor of Anesthesia and Professor in the School of Nutrition, Montreal General Hospital,
Department of Anesthesia of McGill University.

Dr.Francesco Carli completed his medical training and anesthesia training in Turin, Italy and London, England. He has worked as Clinical and Research Fellow in Paris and Montreal. He completed a Master in surgical metabolism at the University of London, England. He was staff anaesthesiologist and research scientist at Northwick Park Hospital and Medical Research Centre, Harrow, Middlesex and the Hammersmith Royal Postgraduate Medical School, London, England before coming to McGill University as the Wesley Bourne Professor and Chairman of the department of Anesthesia (Chairmanship 1994-2004).
He is the Chair of the Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society International Education Foundation (CASIEF);Board Member of the Louise and Allan Edwards Foundation; President of the Peri Operative Program (POP).
Dr Carli has served as volunteer physician/educator at the Medical College of Monrovia (Liberia), at Centre-Hopitalo Universitaire de Kigaly (Rwanda), and at the Medical School of East Jerusalem and West Bank.
Dr Carli is the Canadian representative of the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS).

Research interests: metabolic changes associated with surgery and the impact of perioperative interventions (regional analgesia, nutrition, hormones, exercise) on postoperative recovery; evaluation of functional outcome measures during the surgical recovery process; prehabilitation of surgical patients

Gabriele Baldini, MD, MSc

Assistant Professor, Department of Anesthesia of McGill University

Dr.Gabriele Baldini graduated in Medicine in 2003 from the University of Florence, Italy. After having completed his residency program in Anesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine in 2007 from the University of Florence, he completed a clinical fellowship in Anesthesia for Minimal Invasive Surgery and Fast-track surgery, and a clinical fellowship in Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine at McGill University. He also received a Master Degree in Science Experimental Surgery at McGill University under the supervision of Dr .Carli and Dr. Feldman, studying the effects of intravenous lidocaine on short and long term outcomes in patients undergoing ambulatory surgery.

Since 2011 he works as anesthesiologist in the Department of Anesthesia at the Montreal General Hospital. Together with Dr. Carli and Dr. Feldman he is member of the Surgical Recovery (SuRe) Team, a multidisciplinary group developed with the aim to improve perioperative care. He is also in charge of the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) of the Montreal General Hospital.

Clinical interests: preoperative evaluation and optimization, development of perioperative clinical pathway; anesthesia for abdominal, thoracic, urologic, orthopedic and plastic surgical procedures; anesthesia for trauma patients

Research interests: optimization of patient physical and nutritional status prior to surgery, fluid management, choice of anesthesia, pain control and postoperative complications
