But making conservation decisions about where to locate new protected areas is complicated. It depends on data both about biodiversity and about a range of benefits (e.g. freshwater, climate regulation, recreation) that people get from nature. Surprisingly, despite the size of the country, new mapping suggests that less than 1% of Canada’s land (0.6% of total area or approximately 56,000 km2) is a hotspot, providing all these benefits in one place.
Mon, 04 Jan 2021 17:12:48 +0000 katherine.gombay@mcgill.ca 255652 at /newsroom $5.5M support for new Canadian ecosystem service network /newsroom/channels/news/55m-support-new-canadian-ecosystems-service-network-300245
Protecting Canada’s vast wealth of natural resources, which contribute significantly to our national economy, will depend on our ability to manage ecosystems and all the services they provide for human well-being now and in the future. Leading sustainability scientist, Elena Bennett, a professor in the School of the Environment and Department of Natural Resource Sciences at McGill University, has assembled a network of researchers to ensure that Canada’s working landscapes—land actively used for production of resources such as food—remain biologically diverse, resilient, and adaptive.
Wed, 04 Sep 2019 18:36:01 +0000 mona.noonoo@mail.mcgill.ca 187950 at /newsroom The Media and the Environment /newsroom/channels/news/media-and-environment-263603
The 2016 Beaverbrook Annual Lecture on Oct. 24 will present two speakers followed by a Q&A with the audience on the overall issues of media and the environment.:
Fri, 21 Oct 2016 17:04:13 +0000 priya.pajel@mail.mcgill.ca 26306 at /newsroom Astrophysicist Vicky Kaspi wins top Cdn science prize /newsroom/channels/news/astrophysicist-vicky-kaspi-wins-top-cdn-science-prize-258612
By Chris Chipello, McGill Newsroom

McGill researchers Elena Bennett and Yasser Gidi also honoured by NSERC

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) has named McGill University astrophysicist Vicky Kaspi as this year’s recipient of the Gerhard Herzberg Canada Gold Medal for Science and Engineering, NSERC’s highest honour, in recognition of the excellence and influence of her research contributions.
Mon, 15 Feb 2016 17:48:07 +0000 nima.adibpour@mail.mcgill.ca 25300 at /newsroom Elena Bennett /newsroom/elena-bennett Thu, 19 Dec 2019 19:35:06 +0000 laurie.devine@mcgill.ca 24241 at /newsroom Paris Climate Change Conference (Nov.-Dec. 2015) /newsroom/channels/news/paris-climate-change-conference-november-2015-256412

The 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP 21, will be held in Paris from November 30 to December 11.
