Dr. Ahmed Aoude is an assistant professor in Orthopedic Surgery at McGill University. He completed fellowships in Orthopedic Oncology at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto and Spine Surgery at Foothills Medical Center in Calgary. His practice includes complex oncology resections and spine reconstructive surgery. Prior to medicine, Dr. Aoude obtained degrees in electrical engineering and biomedical engineering at McGill University. He also was a project manager designing and developing computer assisted surgery equipment and techniques for orthopedic surgery prior to pursuing his MD at University of Montreal. To date, he has multiple orthopedic surgery patents and many peer reviewed publications in orthopedics. His research interests include clinical outcomes and surgical techniques, as well as medical device development and design.

Prof. Lisbet Haglund is a professor in the department of Surgery, division of Orthopaedics at McGill. She leads an internationally recognized team focused on translational interdisciplinary research on spine biology, biomechanics and pain. The team has designed and fabricated custom bioreactors for intact intervertebral disc (IVD) culture that simulate long term in vivo loading. The developed techniques are used to study IVD degeneration and associated pain, and to develop novel approaches for treatment. Together these resources place our team in a unique position to evaluate potential therapeutics to retard IVD degeneration and promote regeneration and repair. More recently the program has been extended to also cover tissue engineering of bone, cartilage and IVD tissue. Here we use hydrogels for intervertebral disc repair and 3D printing of FDA approved materials to repair damaged bone and cartilaginous tissues.
