McGill stands with UWaterloo, condemns violence in all its forms

Dear members of the McGill community,

The McGill University community is deeply saddened by the violent incident that took place at the University of Waterloo yesterday. Our thoughts are with the victims, their families and friends, and the entire UWaterloo community. We stand with them during this difficult time.

Waterloo police indicated they believe the accused they have in custody targeted a gender-studies class and committed a hate-related crime related to gender expression and gender identity. I want to reassure members of McGill that the safety and well-being of every member of our community always remains our top priority. We stand with members of our community who may be concerned that their teaching, research, or advocacy might heighten their vulnerability to such incidents. Violence and discrimination of any form have no place in our society.

Students who may require counselling can access the services offered by the Student Wellness Hub (514-398-6017), as well as , a service which students can access 24/7, from anywhere in the world, whenever they need to speak with a mental health professional for support. Staff members can access assistance through the Employee and Family Assistance Program.

Sincerely,

Deep Saini
Principal and Vice-Chancellor
