Abstract: I would like to report on some recent work on a thalamocortical model of the monkey visual cortex (V1), which is very similar to that of humans. Having built a mechanistic model the outputs of which show good quantitative agreement with data for multiple visual functions, we analyze model dynamics in the hope that they will shed light on mechanisms for real cortex. Three aspects of model behavior will be discussed. They are (1) the dynamics of E/I balance in local circuits, (2) the dynamics underlying how V1 neurons acquire some of their visual capabilities such as orientation and direction selectivity, and (3) dynamics across cortical surfaces, which I view as having much similarity with nonequilibrium statistical mechanics. Along the way, I hope to offer insight into phenomena of general theoretical interest, such as the unreasonable effectiveness of external inputs and interaction of feed forward and intra-cortical currents.
