Nigel Roulet awarded David Thomson Award for Graduate Supervision and Teaching

Published: 19 June 2024

Congratulations to Professor Nigel Roulet, Department of Geography, for being awarded the 2024 David Thomson Award for Graduate Supervision and Teaching!

This award recognizes an outstanding faculty member who has been supervising graduate students for more than ten years. Roulet started as an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography in 1994 and began his term as Graduate Program Director of the department the following year.

“He has been a remarkable influence on graduate education…through his directorship of graduate programs, and through his recognition of graduate students as changemakers, both in the context of environment and society, and how graduate programs are structured and run,” said Russell Steele, Associate Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies for Agricultural and Environmental Science, Engineering, Law, and Science.

“Working with Professor Roulet has provided me with invaluable guidance on professional conduct as a colleague, collaborator, mentor, and teacher,” wrote a former student. “Reflecting decades later, his mentorship holds the test of time. I can honestly describe my time as part of his research group in the early 2000s as a healthy and inclusive experience, and his example continues to directly inform how I mentor students today.”

The award was bestowed during the Science Convocation ceremony held May 31.
