Program Requirements

The main objective of the Professional Development Certificate in Project Management is to equip professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully manage projects of various types and scale. Emphasis is placed on the practical application of project management principles, tools, and methodology as outlined in the industry standard, the Project Management Institute’s "A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge" (PMBOK® Guide. Other topics include techniques for building, leading, and motivating effective project teams; critical interpersonal skills, including communication, conflict resolution, writing, and facilitation; and strategic and adaptive project management approaches to achieve business results. This program is offered in English and must be completed within 2 years.

    Overview

    Business : The objective is to help learners develop effective interpersonal skills. Emphasis is placed on the following areas: communication styles, emotional intelligence, conflict resolution, working with teams and influencing others, workplace diversity and intercultural communication, presentation skills, and facilitation skills. As a result of acquiring and developing these interpersonal skills, learners can increase their overall professional effectiveness.

    Communication (CCE) : Concepts and principles of effective written communication: audience, purpose, organization, and style. Emphasis on business documents commonly produced by professionals (e.g., project and business plans, reports, status updates, proposals, analyses). Pre-writing and re-writing processes, including self-editing to enhance clarity, conciseness, and coherence. Audio-recorded instructor feedback.

    Overview

    Engineering (CCE) : This course addresses the fundamental principles of project management, and the tools and techniques at our disposal to help achieve our goals. These principles, largely developed and tested on engineering projects, are being successfully applied to projects of all sizes and types within the business world. Topics covered include: project definition and start up; planning, scheduling and estimating; approval process, including testing for alternatives; project information and control systems; resource selection and allocation, implementation; post-project evaluation; project management as a career; skills and knowledge required by professionals, including decision-making and resource allocation appropriate to project phases; integration with other disciplines, including accounting and finance. Students will have the opportunity to apply the principles they learn through lab sessions using the latest computerized project management tools.
