Current research:

I head the Women’s Health Research Unit of the MUHC, one of the most active research units in gynecologic cancer in Canada. With collaborators in the molecular genetics, computational genomics, and mechanical engineering departments at McGill University, I am principal investigator of a study that has developed a new genomic pap test called DOvEEgene (Detecting Ovarian and Endometrial cancer Early using genomics). DOvEEgene is currently being evaluated in a Phase III trial with the support of the Genomic Applications Partnership Program (GAPP), which is co-funded by Genome Canada, Génome Quebec and the McGill University Health Centre Foundation. The test uses next-generation sequencing to interrogate 28 genes involved in the development of sporadic and hereditary ovarian and endometrial cancers in women 45-75 years old. Currently, the direct costs of treating the 10,000 Canadian women diagnosed with these cancers every year is over $1 billion. It is expected that with DOvEEgene detecting these cancers in earlier stages, these expenditures could be decreased and ultimately lead to a better prognosis for patients.

Biography:

Dr. Lucy Gilbert is a Professor in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and the Department of Oncology at McGill University. She is the Director of Gynecologic Oncology at McGill University and McGill University Health Centre (MUHC), which is a designated level-IV unit that provides gynecological cancer care for the province of Quebec. Dr Gilbert heads the Women’s Health Research Unit of the MUHC, which focuses on research that produces practical and immediate benefits for women with cancer. The Women’s Health Research Unit is active in collaborative multinational clinical trials investigating new precision therapies for gynecologic cancers. However, Dr Gilbert’s main area of interest is the early detection of ovarian and uterine cancers while they are still curable. To this end, she has set up a network of satellite clinics called DOvEE (Diagnosing Ovarian and Endometrial Cancers Early) which provide open access and fast-track investigations to women over 45 with symptoms associated with gynecologic cancers. She and her team have developed a new genetic pap-test called DOvEEgene for detecting these cancers very early before they even cause symptoms. Her team has completed the Phase I & II testing of the DOvEEgene test and is set to launch the Phase III.

In 2021, Dr. Gilbert was recognized as one of the Top 25 Women of Influence in Canada for her contribution to Women’s Health.
