Trauma Surgery
Dr. Max Talbot, MD, FRCSC, is a trauma surgeon and educator at McGill University with expertise in military and field trauma care. As a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, he has made significant contributions to trauma surgery, particularly in emergency and damage-control procedures in military settings. His research focuses on enhancing surgical outcomes in low-resource environments and improving the capabilities of non-surgeon clinicians through technological advancements.Â
Dr. Talbot’s work includes pioneering studies on tele-mentored trauma surgery, where he demonstrated the feasibility of guiding non-surgeon Medical Officers through critical procedures like chest tube insertion and resuscitative thoracotomy using secure video-conferencing. His research also addresses spinal injuries in Canadian Forces members injured by IEDs in Afghanistan, advocating for better spinal immobilization protocols in battlefield care.Â
Additionally, Dr. Talbot has contributed to studies on military medical support systems, emphasizing the need for standardized care in multinational operations. His work continues to inform trauma care strategies for both military and civilian contexts, improving surgical training and patient outcomes in high-risk environments.Â
