Bioengineering

Overview

Bioengineering uses living systems as an inspiration and tool to design and create. It is a rapidly growing discipline covering a range of topics like materials science and tissue engineering, biomedical devices and instrumentation, molecular and cellular engineering, as well as environmental engineering.

Bioengineers are curious about the complexity of living organisms. They constantly seek to improve current state-of-the-art technology as they work to develop life-enhancing and life-saving technologies.

McGill offers one of the only Bioengineering undergraduate programs in Canada which provides a truly distinct and innovative learning experience. As bioengineering couples fundamental engineering principles with biology, you will acquire a solid background in math, physics, and chemistry.

Careers

As a bioengineer, you can work in various and diverse fields, including the pharmaceutical, medical device, healthcare, bioenergy, and agricultural biotechnology sectors. There are also many exciting opportunities for graduate studies in a variety of fields at McGill or elsewhere. Graduates obtain the skills needed to be great project managers through their studies, meaning they may also move into management and executive positions.

You could become a professional:

  • Rehabilitation engineer
  • Biomechanical engineer
  • Clinical engineer
  • Researcher

Faculty

As experts in a rapidly evolving field, our instructors conduct research into pressing biological issues and develop solutions grounded in engineering principles. You can learn from distinguished faculty with interests in things like vaccine development, the wiring of the cell, and biodevices.

McGill’s Bioengineering undergraduate program is one of the very few undergraduate degrees of its kind offered in Canada. It is also the only program that places emphasis on providing solid foundations in both engineering and biology principles. As a Bioengineering student, you will benefit from the opportunity of studying in a multidisciplinary environment and being exposed to different concepts.

Possible minors

Minors are a great way to customize your academic experience. Many students use minors to pursue interests outside their major, while others choose minors to complement their degree.
