Kinesiology

Overview

Kinesiology, the study of human movement, is also largely known as exercise or sport science. As part of McGill’s Faculty of Education (Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education), the BSc Kinesiology program will provide you with the theoretical learning and practical training in various areas of movement science. Both undergraduate Kinesiology programs (Major and Honours) allow you to put your learned theory into practice through internship opportunities as early as the second year of studies.

Students with a keen interest in research who are considering graduate studies may opt into the Honours program after completing year two of the B.Sc program. The Honours stream gives you the chance to spend your final year taking more advanced courses and working on a research project under the direct supervision of a department faculty expert.

This versatile yet well-structured B.Sc program equips students with diverse knowledge in a myriad of specialized areas including anatomy, ergonomics, physiology, exercise psychology, health and nutrition, and adapted physical activity, among others. Because of the wide knowledge base in both biological and social sciences, this undergraduate program can open doors to many career options or further academic pursuits.

Careers

An undergraduate degree in Kinesiology can lead you to a wide range of career options. Many graduates choose to work in occupations that focus on athletics, movement, recreation, therapy, and rehabilitation. Employment is available in many types of establishments. You can work in hospitals, rehabilitation centres, fitness facilities, clinics, recreational centres, educational institutions, and sports organizations.

You could become a professional:

  • Certified Kinesiologist
  • Exercise Physiologist
  • Rehabilitation Specialist
  • Fitness Trainer
  • Recreational Therapist
  • Professional Head Coach

Student experience

Kinesiology courses are generally housed within the McGill Sports Complex (i.e. Currie Gymnasium Building) at the base of the Montreal landmark, Mount Royal. The Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education (KPE) has dedicated large automated classrooms for up to 100 students and smaller seminar rooms, as well as the renovated Tassone Teaching Lab and other laboratory spaces equipped with fitness equipment and modern machinery for scientific research.

As KPE is a smaller and close-knit department within the university, you will appreciate the feeling of community, making personal connections and being supported by the members of the academic and administrative teams and advisors. KPE students also have a dedicated student society known as SAPEK (Student Association of Physical Education and Kinesiology).
