TDPCR - Teresa Dellar Palliative Care Residence

Location

265 André-Brunet, Kirkland, Qc H9H 3R4

Service Description

The Teresa Dellar Palliative Care Residence is an independent, community-based non-profit institution, accredited by the Quebec government to provide palliative care health services.

The West Island Palliative Care Residence was opened in 2002 with nine beds. It expanded in 2012 to 23 beds, making it the largest free-standing palliative care residence in Canada.  On September 10, 2020, it was renamed the Teresa Dellar Palliative Care Residence.

We want our patients to live the final chapter of their lives in the best and most fulfilling manner possible. Our medical and volunteer teams work together to manage symptoms and meet emotional, social, and spiritual needs with comfort and dignity in our warm, home-like environment.

We provide comfortable surroundings and excellent support services to help patients and families achieve peace of mind as they move together through the challenges of the end of a life. Our ability to provide excellent care that ensures the patient’s comfort helps everyone come to terms with what is occurring. We also provide follow-up bereavement services to families for a year.

Service Access

An Admissions Committee determines, on a case-by-case basis, which patient(s) will be accepted for admission. Generally, we require a medically documented estimated life expectancy of less than three months, and residence by the patient or the primary caregiver in the western part of the island of Montreal and west up to the Ontario border. A health care professional (a social worker, nurse, or doctor) must fill out our admission request form for the patient.

Referrals to the Teresa Dellar Palliative Care Residence are made through the patient's treating physician (nurse or social worker).

Montreal Institute for Palliative Care

The Montreal Institute for Palliative Care is a newly formed branch of the Residence launched in May, 2018. The Institute provides education, knowledge exchange in various forms and performs research recognizing the increasing unmet need for quality palliative care across all delivery models. The intent is to expand palliative care capabilities and quality to the benefit of our citizens. Through the Residence, rotation programs are provided to students in Medicine, Nursing and Social Work.
