Your finances

McGill's Scholarships and Student Aid share the concerns of students who worry about managing their finances effectively over the course of their degree. That's why Scholarships and Student Aid has worked directly with students for students to create The Frugal Scholar Program - a comprehensive financial literacy program designed to help you budget effectively and graduate with manageable debt.

The steps

Each page in this section represents an important step in the Frugal Scholar's path to financial wellness. Start by Estimating your resources then Build your budget and discover the peace of mind that comes with a realistic plan.

Already have a budget built? Cash in on our Cheap Sheet tips to stay on track, or Manage your debt for instructions on how to repay loans and avoid common debt regrets.

The tools

  • The File Frugal Scholar Toolkit is a set of budget worksheets developed by Scholarships and Student Aid and students like you to help you understand your costs and live for less! The PDF icon Frugal Scholar Toolkit Guide is a printable version of instructions that will show you how to use the Toolkit.
  • For medical students: the File Frugal Scholar MDCM Toolkit and PDF icon Guide is an expanded version of our standard Toolkit developed by Scholarships and Student Aid in collaboration with McGill medical students and The WELL Office.

Need more help?

If you have completed the steps in this section and are still struggling to build or stick to your budget, you can schedule a Budget & Debt Management appointment with one of our Financial Aid Counsellors.
